Building a deck used to be easy.
You called a contractor.
He measured the backyard, asked a couple of questions, gave you a price, and a few weeks later you had a deck.
Simple.
Today?
The whole backyard industry has gone crazy.
Maybe you don’t have a deck.
Maybe yours is falling apart.
Maybe it’s too small. Too big. Too high. Too low.
Maybe you’ve already talked to three contractors.
Instead of getting answers, you ended up with even more questions.
Pressure-treated, Cedar, Composite, PVC, Aluminum, Brazilnut wood or South American Chestnut
Every manufacturer has the best product.
Every contractor has a favourite.
Every salesperson has the one you absolutely have to buy.
What the hell is composite anyway?
Ask three different people and you’ll probably get four different answers.
Then somebody starts talking about PVC.
PVC?
Isn’t that what my windows are made of?
Now it’s a deck?
Then come the railings.
Wood.Aluminum.Glass.Frameless glass.Cable.
Just when you think you’ve got that figured out…
“Do you want lighting?”
When did everybody decide a deck needed electricity?
You started out wanting somewhere to put a barbecue.
Now it feels like you’re planning a space launch.
Then there’s permits.
Building code.
Beam spans.
Footings.
Joist spacing.
Property lines.
Inspections.
Everybody has an opinion.
The problem is, after talking to five different people, you’re somehow more confused than when you started.
Here’s the funny part.
It really isn’t that complicated.
Once you organize everything, it starts making sense.
Most homeowners don’t need to become deck experts.
They just need someone to explain things in plain English.
That’s why I started Deck Talk.
Not to sell you the most expensive deck.
Not to tell you one product is garbage and another is perfect.
Just honest answers from someone who’s been building for a long time.
Some people love pressure-treated wood.
A beautiful Saturday. A brush in one hand. A coffee… or maybe something stronger… in the other.
For them, staining a deck isn’t work.
It’s therapy.
Other people want to build the deck once…
…and never think about it again.
Neither one is wrong.
The best deck isn’t the one I like.
It isn’t the one your neighbour likes.
It’s the one that fits your life.
